Situ Rinpoche appeared as Dombipa, an Indian Mahasiddha, who lived around the 10th Century CE. Dombipa and Krishnacarya were the two main individuals who received the transmission of Virupas lineage. In this incarnation, the Tai Situpa was a pious King who upheld the teachings of the dharma without flaw. In the region of Magadha, Dombipa took birth as the King. He ruled as a religious man, having been taught the profound instructions of the Vajrayana by the master Virupa. Dombipa achieved accomplishment (siddhi) through the practice of Hevajra. Dombipa regarded his subjects just as a father thinks of his only son. Most of his people though were not aware that their King had entered the path of the profound dharma. But, King Dombipa was by nature a kind man, so the people always said, "Our King is indeed a pious man." One day King Dombipa said to his minister,"The people are suffering in our country. Thieves and robbers are destroying property. Because of the people's little merit, there are increasing numbers of the poor and indignant. To deliver the land from fear and poverty, you must hang a great bell on the trunk of a tree. If anyone witnesses a crime or sees poverty let him strike this bell." The minister did as he was told. Due to the King's skillful means, fear and poverty were bought to an end in Magadha. His people became aware of the grave situation and took great steps to improve Magadha. One day, King Dombipa was offered dance and music by a group of singers. The singers were from the lower caste, often shunned by people and given the most crude jobs. The young daughter of one singer was perfect in nature and without a single flaw. She had undefiled thoughts, and was virtuous. She had a lovely face, good complexion and all the qualities of a dakini. The King requested for the daughter to be his consort, but her father (the singer) refused. He retorted to the King, "Your majesty is a king of Magadha, you rule 800,000 cities. Because of your royal wealth, you do not have to work for a living. We are of low caste, denigrated and shunned by other classes of people. It is not fitting for you to make such a request." The King made his request again, this time offering a large sum of wealth to the singer. For twelve years, the people did not know that a low-caste girl was the King's religious consort, but eventually it was discovered. Ignorant and bias, people saw it as unfitting for the King to have a consort of the lowest caste. So, the King abdicated his throne in favor of his son. King Dombipa chose to live in the forest as a Buddhist practitioner with his virtuous wife. Dombi Heruka became renown as one of the eighty-four great tantric mahasiddhas of India and gained complete realization. Throughout India he was venerated. |
