Holy Sites of Buddhism

For centuries, Buddhist would undertake long and often dangerous trips to visit holy sites, or to visit their masters in far-away lands. Many spent years of hardship to visit these places. For a Buddhist pilgrim, such a journey is not only to appreciate the art and architecture at these holy sites. A Buddhist pilgrim goes to these holy sites to practice the dharma and further one's understanding of the teachings.

Fa Hsien and Hsuan Tang are two of the most renown Buddhist pilgrims who spent years traveling to India and Central Asia.

Kushinagar:
place where the Buddha passed away.
Rajgir:
Place of Taming the Drunken Elephant; one of the sites of the Buddha's teachings, known for its famous hot springs. This town includes the Vulture's Peak gridkutta) where the Buddha spent many months teaching the dharma, and it also includes the site where the First Buddhist Council was held at the Saptparni caves.
Sravasti:
Place of the Twin Miracle; the site where the Buddha and his disciples spent the rainy season each year, residing at the Jetavana (the Jeta's grove).
Sankassa:
Place of the Descent from Heaven; the Buddha descended back to earth in this town after teaching in the heavenly realms for a few months of his life.
Vaishali:
Place where a Band of Monkeys offered honey to the Buddha; site where the Buddha taught many sutras, where the order of Buddhist nuns was established, and where the Second Buddhist Council was held.

Lhasa:
Tibet's capital; seat of the Potala (the Dalai Lama's palace in Tibet) and the Jokhang (which houses the most sacred statute of the Buddha). The three great seats of the Gelugpa lineage (Sera, Ganden and Drepung) are nearby in the suburbs of Lhasa.
