Maitripa

Maitripa was a student at the famed Nalanda University in India, during the time when Naropa was its chancellor.  He also entered Vikramasila University but was expelled by its chancellor, who did not wish to upset the other monks that were misunderstanding Maitripa’s Vajrayana practices.  Maitripa then, taking his cushion, crossed the Ganges.  The Vikramasila community realized their misjudgment and regretted expelling Maitripa.

Maitripa became the disciple of Shawaripa, attaining the mastery of a Mahasiddha.  The lineage of Asanga was likewise passed down to Him, along with the treatises on buddha-
nature such as the Uttaratantra. He became one of the main teachers to Marpa Lotsawa of Tibet.
