Mahasiddha Shawaripa

The Mahasiddha Shawaripa and his wife were hunters for many years.  However, the Bodhisattva of Compassion (Avalokitesvara) humiliated Shawari’s skill in hunting. The Bodhisattva emanated forth from the appearance of one hundred animals and then successfully shot down all the animals with a single arrow.  Shawaripa could not match this skill and was revealed his future rebirth of tormenting hells. Due to the accumulation of negative karma, he was destined for the hell realms.

After this, Shawaripa became a devoted practitioner.

The Mahasiddha
and his wife became quickly enlightened through the instructions of Saraha, the Bodhisattvas Ratnamati and Sukhanata, and the guidance of Nagarjuna.  He practiced in many caves in India, and received visions of deities such as the Six-arm Mahakala. The practice of Vajrayogini was a major contribution of Shawaripa towards the lineage.
