EARLY LIFE AS THE KARMAPA
The 17th Karmapa received most of his early education under the overall guidance of Drupon Dechen Rinpoche at Tsurphu monastery. The Karmapa is often able to comprehend an entire text only after one recitation. By the age of thirteen, His Holiness already completed all the requirements in the study of grammar, the arts, religious dance, monastic skills and ritual texts. This was completed mainly under the direction of Umze Thubten Zangpo and Lama Lodro Sherab, who both served the 16th Karmapa as attendants. His Holiness then began studying Buddhist philosophy which included the texts The Profound Inner Meaning, the Uttara Tantra commentary and The Two Seals.

In April of 1993, the Karmapa miraculously imprinted his hand into solid stone. His Holiness did this numerous other times. In 1996, His Holiness rubbed his robe against stones and the mantra "Karmapa Khyenno" spontaneously appeared.

In 1994, His Holiness set out on a visit to mainland China. He visited the Gelugpa monasteries and centers of the Potala, Jokhang, Tashilunpo, Drepung, Sera and Ganden. The Karmapa then visited Beijing and met the President Jiang Zemin. He paid homage to the Buddha’s tooth which is enshrined in Beijing. His Holiness visited the Wutai Mountains which are sacred to Manjushri and the port cities of Sanghai, Chengdu and Nanking.

His Holiness received many gifts and copies of Buddhist scriptures. He most surely fulfilled the prediction that He will not stay far from some and close to others, protecting all beings, by giving his blessings in China. He even further fulfilled this prediction by then leaving China in order to benefit the whole world later on in his life.

The monastery of Tsurphu, the main seat of the Karmapa, had been further renovated and rebuilt. The sacred lama dances were performed yearly and giant paintings, including a ten-story high Shakyamuni Buddha and a smaller Mahakala thangka, are unveiled to the public. The main shrine has been completed and further temples were built. Also, a road linking the monastery to Lhasa began construction.

On May 10, 1998, Drupon Dechen Rinpoche died. Karmapa performed the cremation and did a phowa for him. A stupa was made between the destroyed stupas of the first and second Karmapas for Drupon Dechen. After Drupon Dechen Rinpoche’s passing, the Karmapa assumed complete responsibility for the monastery and Khenpo Palden became his tutor.
