The Vajra Regents informed the public that the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa would soon be found within six months. Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche was appointed to be the representative of the Vajra Regents and would greet the Gyalwa Karmapa soon after His discovery. The Venerable Drupon Dechen, a former retreat master of Rumtek and close disciple to the 16th Karmapa, was instructed by the late Gyalwa Karmapa to someday return to Tibet to supervise the reconstruction of Tsurphu monastery. Due to his efforts and the generosity of devotees, the monastery and main seat of the Karmapa in Tibet was rebuilt. A copy of the prediction letter and its interpretation was sent to Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet. Drupon Dechen Rinpoche sent Lama Tomo and other representatives to find the Karmapa. Since Tibet is occupied by the Chinese Government, the Tibetans had no choice but follow the law. So, they had to obtain approval to travel and to conduct such a search. Apo Gaga begged his parents to move to their summer pasture a month earlier, instead of going a month later in May. Their move placed them directly in the location and valley described by the 16th Karmapa in the prediction letter (The valley of the cow). The day that the search party from Tsurphu was going to arrive, Apo Gaga exclaimed that his monks were coming. He danced with joy and told his parents to set up a tent. Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche was appointed to represented all the Vajra Regents in officially escorting the Gyalwa Karmapa to Tsurphu Monastery. However, Rinpoche tragically passed away due to a car crash in late April of 1992, only a few days before his departure to Tibet. His death was caused by those who were creating obstacles for the Kagyu lineage. For forty-nine days the funeral rites were performed in India headed by Situ Rinpoche and Gyaltsab Rinpoche. Therefore, each Regent sent their own personal representatives to greet the Karmapa. After the search party made inquiries with the families in the surrounding tents, they then proceeded to Apo Gagas tent and inquired from the parents some information. The Karmapa was then escorted to Kalek Monastery. Akong Tulku Rinpoche (as Situ Rinpoche's representative) and Sherab Gyaltsen (as Gyaltsab Rinpoche's representative) arrived to present gifts and confirm the identity of the Karmapa. Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche bathed the Karmapa and presented His Holiness with the monastic robe. They then left Kalek Monastery, during their departure three suns arose in the sky to be seen by hundreds. His Holiness soon returned to Tsurphu on horseback to be greeted by ceremonies, folk dancers, music, singing and celebrations. |
