On March 19, 1992, the Four Vajra Regents (Tai Situ Rinpoche, Gyaltsab Rinpoche, Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche and Shamar Rinpoche) convened to discuss the prediction letter. Their conclusion was that the letter was authentic and as Jamgon Kongtrul put it, "It is clear and precise. We are all very confident about it." Owing to the letter's sacred nature, Shamar Rinpoche refused to let others touch it.

The prediction letter read:
Emaho! Self awareness is always bliss;
The dharmadhatu is free from center or edge.
To the north of here, in the east (of the land) of snow
Is a country where self arisen divine thunder blazes.
In a beautiful nomad’s place with the name of a cow,
The method is Dondrup and the wisdom is Lolaga.
Born in the year of the one used for the earth
With the wondrous, far-reaching sound of the white one, This is the one known as Karmapa.

He will be nurtured by the Lord Donyo Drupa
Without bias, he pervades all directions
Without being close to some and distant from others
He is the protector of all beings.
The sun of the Buddha’s dharma that benefits others always blazes.

The sacred letter of prediction and the envelope that contained it (which were enclosed in the pouch given to Tai Situ Rinpoche in 1981) showed natural and authentic signs of wear and weathering that could only occur from years of exposure and existence inside the pouch that was assumed to contain relics.

Due to the years of weathering even the signature's ink, although visible as shown here, seeped through and marked the upper portion of the sacred letter which it was folded on top of.

At the end of the meeting in March, the Four Vajra Regents all verified that the Sacred Letter was in fact the handwriting of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. Since that time, numerous other Lamas have likewise noticed the similarity. The 16th Gyalwa Karmapa's handwriting has often been the object of public display, so people's familiarity with it is common place. Other lamas such as HH the Dalai Lama and the Sakya Trizin also have stated the authenticity of the sacred prediction letter.

A short interpretation of this letter is that the eastern part of the land of snow is eastern Tibet (Kham). Lhatok, which means divine thunder, is the region where Karmapa’s family lived. Bakor, the valley of the cow, was where the search party found the Karmapa. The method (father in Buddhist symbolism) is named Dondrup, and the wisdom (mother in Buddhist symbolism) is Lolaga. The one used for the earth is the ox, the ox year is 1985. The sound of the white one is the conch shell, which was the music heard after the Karmapa's birth. Donyo Drupa (which is the name of the 12th Tai Situ Rinpoche) is the person who shall teach the Karmapa.
