The Most Venerable Thrangu Rinpoche was appointed to be the Karmapa’s tutor by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

His Holiness began receiving the proper Kagyu transmissions from Tai Situ Rinpoche and other masters. Tai Situ Rinpoche is the main teacher to the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa. The Gyalwa Karmapa is staying at his temporary residence in Gyuto Monastery, near Dharamshala.

Since then the Gyalwa Karmapa has attended teachings given by the Dalai Lama. He also received teachings on Gampopa’s text the Precious Ornament of Liberation from Bokar Rinpoche.

The Gyalwa Karmapa received transmissions from Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche and extensive tutoring under the guidance of Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche.

From Goshir Gyaltsab Rinpoche, the 17th Karmapa received the Rinchen Terdzo, which is a collection of the various transmissions and especially of the terma tradition.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama bestowed empowerments such as Guhyasamaya to the Gyalwa Karmapa.

On July 24th, 2002, the Gyalwa Karmapa received his novice monk vows (Getsul) from His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the presence of Gyaltsab Rinpoche and hundreds of monks at Gyuto Monastery.
