updated with the latest News on His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Gyalwa Karmapa and the Buddhist community

The main seat of the Gyalwa Karmapa in exile is Rumtek Monastery, Sikkim. Previously the 16th Karmapa fled Tibet in 1959 and made Rumtek his main seat in India.

After the passing of the 16th Karmapa Rigpe Dorje in 1981, the monastery was without its head Lama. With the prediction letter he left behind, Karmapa Rigpe Dorje's reincarnation was found and recognized. Then, with the official confirmation of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Urgyen Trinley Dorje was enthroned at Tsurphu Monastery, Tibet in 1992.

In January of 2000, the 17th Karmapa fled Tibet and arrived at the doorstep of the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala; since then, the Karmapa has been receiving the necessary transmissions and spiritual teachings from various Kagyu masters.

The time has come for India to officially allow the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa to assume his role as the head of Rumtek Monastery. Numerous requests, including those from HH the Dalai Lama and the Chief Minister of Sikkim, have been made to the Government of India to grant the Karmapa permission to travel to Sikkim.
